Quilt Artist, Designer and Judge
I was born in Durban, South Africa, into a family of artists and learned a variety of art forms from dressmaking to batik and pottery from my parents all of which have influenced the textile art that I make today. Classes with teachers such as Michael James, Nancy Crow and Pauline Burbidge, amongst others, further enhanced my artwork.
I am an accredited quilt judge (South African Quilter’s Guild 1998) and was on the sub-committee of The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles that established a quilt-judging course in Great Britain.
I have judged nationally and internationally.
I am a member of Contemporary Quilt and the international 12 By the Dozen group which set challenges and stretch their members.
I had a long and esteemed association with a large patchwork shop, ‘Yolande Machemer GmbH’ in Germany, attending major American quilt markets for 10 years. As a result I was able to keep up to date with trends, techniques, fabrics, books and gadgets. I have designed a number of Block-of-the-Month quilts for the shop seeing them all the way through production: calculating the yardage of fabric to be ordered for the kits to designing the graphics, writing the patterns and type-setting to sewing the shop models. I have also converted dozens of books and patterns from imperial to metric measurement for the European market.
